R. O. B. U. S. T. - Rational Obstetric Utilization of Staffing and Time (20067)

Today's healthcare institutions are faced with the challenge of increasing individual and community wellness and improving patient satisfaction, while at the same time driving costs down. This challenge can be met by bringing advanced information technology to healthcare institutions. Prentice Women's Hospital at the McGaw Medical Center of Northwestern University is the busiest delivery center in Illinois with over 7,000 deliveries annually. Furthermore, in an academic setting, a productive Obstetric Anesthesiology Department includes elements such as availability of labor analgesia and highly trained personnel 24 hours a day, minimal waiting for labor analgesia and minimal overtime personnel costs. In addition to these goals, resident education and academic productivity need to be considered. To assist with the aforementioned goals, we have developed a database program – R.O.B.U.S.T. – Rational Obstetric Anesthesiology Utilization of Staff and Time.

FIELD OF APPLICATION: This program allows us to assist physicians to better manage patient information and assist in clinical decision-making. The information obtained from the database includes specifically:

Average obstetric labor analgesia duration and obstetric operative procedure duration; Distribution of workload over time; and Factors influencing procedure duration (patient, physician, comorbidity, etc.)

This information supports clear communication with other healthcare professionals, executives and other non-healthcare managers. R.O.B.U.S.T. allows us to measure and compare trends and follow time utilization and performance and assists us in cost-effective decision-making.

ADVANTAGES: R.O.B.U.S.T. is a unique software program available for Obstetric Anesthesiology use. There are currently no available commercial software programs for this purpose. This program has a twofold function:

Research use– clinical data collection allows for the study of large numbers of patients, it stimulates and facilitates research endeavors given its ease and speed of use (specifically for studies investigating obstetric anesthesiology staffing, timing, utilization and optimization) Clinical use – the program benefits the patients and health care providers by allowing us to deliver high quality care, with potential for cost reduction and greater patient satisfaction Multi-center use – pooling of large number of patient data from different obstetric anesthesiology departments may allow for comparison of different clinical practices or large prospective research trials.

STAGE OF DEVELOPMENT: R.O.B.U.S.T. is fully operational at Prentice Women's Hospital and has been successfully used for almost a year.
