Electrically Actuated Micropumps

Electrically actuated micropumps enable microchip liquid chromatography separations to be carried out rapidly and with miniaturized instrumentation. The micropumps can be powered with a battery, using potentials in the tens of volts, while generating adequate pressures for liquid chromatographic separations. This technology has potential for application in lightweight (field-deployable) or disposable liquid chromatography instrumentation, for example, to be used in on-site analyses. Parallel arrays of micropumps on microchips could be used in analysis or purification of pharmaceutical active ingredients, proteins, and other biologically important compounds.
