Space Station Paraffin-Actuated Remote Connector (MSC-21998)

Abstract:
The Space Station Paraffin-Actuated Remote Connector (SSPARC) is a device for joining two structural members, either electrically (using remote controls) or manually. The releasable coupling device is composed of a collet fastener, which has retractable latching fingers mounted on one of the structural members to be joined, and a receptacle mounted on the other structural member. Because the propulsion of the collet mechanism is paraffin-driven, this mechanism (connector) weighs less than standard motor-and-gear assemblies; however, a variety of actuators, such as pneumatic, pyrotechnic, hydraulic, or motor systems, could be used. The SSPARC is maintained by the use of a ZipNut as a locking mechanism. Disconnection is effected manually by rotating a worm gear to retract the bolt. Remote reversibility could be achieved through a slight modification of the design.
