Apoptosis and Self-destruct: Mechanisms for Management of Autonomic Systems (GSC-14968)

Abstract:
Autonomic Computing is an emerging area for research and practice that is being promoted by IBM and others. The idea is to borrow principles from the human autonomic system and apply them to computer systems. For example, the human body self heals after an injury, and ideally computer systems would do the same. Our idea is to apply the principle of cell apoptosis and self-destruct to computer systems. That is, like cells in nature, computer systems have predetermined expirations and must receive "stay alive" notifications to continue their operation. The approach is likely to have significant benefit in the realm of autonomous systems.
