Transdermal Optical Communication System

applications of medical devices, telemedicine, and wireless medical diagnostics, there is the need to communicate with such devices implanted in the human body.

The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Lab has conceived a method to communicate via optical link through the skin. An information modulated two-way optical link will lie quiescent until activated by a “wake-up” transmission to the data exchange circuitry, specific data will then be transmitted to and from the implanted device. This concept implies monitoring, programming, diagnosis, and treatment applications in the delivery of healthcare. This would be implemented in MEMS technology in keeping with biocompatibility requirements.
