Integrated, All Photonic Lighting, Heating, Cooling and Communications for Buildings

Unlike much longer wavelength microwave systems such as cellular and cordless technologies, optical and millimeter bands do not penetrate building structures as thoroughly.

The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Lab has invented a new approach for use of optical techniques in an integrated manner for all the principle human environment controls within building structures (heating, cooling, lighting, and communications). A means for effective distribution of coverage for optical and millimeter wavelengths within buildings is a prerequisite to convenient communications. Fully optical light/heat/cooling/wireless communications could greatly reduce building outfitting costs and greatly improve per-room environment regulation.
