Fabrication of Robust Electro-Optical Switching Devices

Highlights

Method for producing robust, long-lasting electro-optical light-controlling devices May be used for beam steering or switching or electro-optically tuneable filter devices Concept for beam switching device demonstrated in laboratory Applications in telecommunications or wherever there is a need to steer or deflect a beam of light Our Innovation

Fabrication methods for constructing permanent patterns in electro-optical crystals by forming patterned variations in the composition of the crystals during their growth process. The method results in the production of robust, light-controlling electro-optical devices that are capable of beam steering or switching or tuning optical wavelengths.

Key Features

Robust devices can operate at temperatures as high as 300°C Thermally stable – may be stored at 300°C Resistant to radiation, long lifetime Development Milestones

Same concept is being used to develop devices for tuning optical wavelengths that will eliminate the need for mechanical tuning. Expected tunability in these devices will be 200-300 nm. The Opportunity

The worldwide telecommunications market is expected to grow at an 9.2 percent compound annual growth rate from 2007 to 2011. The global optical switch market will grow from $392 million in 2003 to $663 million in 2008.
