Synthesis of Colloidal Upconverting Monodisperse Nanocrystals for Biological Applications

Description of the technology: Synthesis, characterization, and spectroscopy of upconverting lanthanide-doped NaYF4 nanocrystals (NCs). Monodisperse cubic NaYF4 NCs were synthesized via a thermal decomposition reaction. Colloidally stable solutions of NaYF4 NCs in nonpolar organic solvents can be obtained.

Benefits:
- The synthetic method uses technical-grade solvents and ligands - Produces highly luminescent and uniform NCs; (27.6 nm ± 1.6). - The colloids of the lanthanide-doped NCs exhibit green/red and blue upconversion luminescence - The synthesis does not involve sophisticated equipment or complicated procedures - NCs can be excited with a 980 nm laser diode with low power densities.

Applications:
- Potential use as biolabels and in biological assays. Industrial partner sought.

One wt % colloidal solutions of nanoparticles in toluene demonstrating upconversion luminescence, and transmission electron micrographs of particles.
