The reduction of redox-sensitive substances by bacteria of the genus Alteromonas or Shewanella
Bio-treatment of aqueous effluents, in particular to remove colour therefrom, is carried out in a Continuous Oscillatory-flow Baffle Reactor. Redox-sensitive substances are reduced by means of bacteria of the genus Alteromonas or Shewanella, or other facultative anaerobes, in a reaction under substantially anaerobic conditions. The redox-sensitive substances that may be reduced include heavy metals, radionuclides, and organic dyes, in particular azo dyes. An electron mediator is introduced, which in combination with the through mixing ensures a rapid reaction. The mediator introduced may be riboflavin. Post-processing under aerobic conditions to break down harmful organics can also be performed.
