Counter-current Chromatographic Arrangement

A chromatographic apparatus for separating components of a mixture comprises a fluid- liquid counter-current column (10) having a central supply region (14) for the mixture, upper and lower phase supply pumps (31, 32) at opposite ends of the column and ultra-violet detectors (35, 36) for detecting the composition of an eluant, the apparatus being monitored and controlled by a processor (40). The supply pumps (31, 32) are operated alternately so that one phase moves while the other is stationary. After supply of the mixture to region (14) has stopped, residual materials are eluted to concentrate a target component in the column. The target component is then pumped out and recovered.
