CCEMC Grand Challenge Deadline: 2013-07-15
Award: 20 Awards of $500,000

The earth’s population is growing and so are the demands for energy. While we must reduce GHG emissions, all projections indicate that we’ll continue to rely on fossil fuels for decades to come.

It’s a challenge facing not only developed countries but also emerging economies around the world — and the solution rests with the development of innovative technologies.

One method to reduce GHG emissions while we continue to rely on fossil fuels is carbon capture and storage (CCS). However, this Challenge wants to broaden this technology by looking into a broad array of end uses for the captured carbon. If captured carbon is repurposed and becomes an enabling starting material instead of a waste stream, new business markets will arise and reduce the need for long-term storage.

The CCEMC is committing CAD$35 million in funding for the most innovative technologies that will convert CO2 emissions into new carbon-based products and markets.
