Ramanan Gurumurthi's Problem Solving Experience:
- My work in Statistical Pattern Recognition started out of curiosity in 2002, over an article purporting that faces can be recognized in a relatively small dimensional space using mathematics. Within 2 years, I matched the best results announced in the literature for Face recognition data sets such as FERET and FRGC. A few months after this break through, I also matched the best results available on Iris recognition for the CASIA database, which was the only respectable one available at that time. The insight into these results gave me confidence has made me foray into applied research and also look out for funding for cutting edge problems in varied areas such as Chemometrics, Algorithmic trading, Music Recognition and Recommender systems. I see my role as a doer, a strategist and a pioneer in these domains. Even though I have turned entrepreneur, I consider myself as a person who has been able to monetize his strengths on his terms.
