Qurat-ul-ain Zahra
I conducted a study to evaluate the antimicrobial effect of Apis mellifera fresh honey on organisms isolated from infected burns in comparison to the antibiotics used in treatment of burn infection, and to evaluate the effects produced when bee honey is added to antibiotic discs.
Thirty patients with burn infection (2-4 weeks old) were selected for this study. The collected blood specimens from the burn wounds were cultured on different media such as CLED, Blood, SS and MacConkey agar and Nutrient agar. Four major bacterial strains including E-coli, Klebsiella spp. Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa were isolated and Antibiotic sensitivity pattern was measured against these microorganisms by using following 3 antibiotics i.e, Amikacin (AK), Zinacef (CXM), Linozolid (LZD).
The results show that honey has a significant effect on the growth of Pseudomonas aeruginosa (61%) followed by E.coli (55%), Staphylococcus aureus (56%), and Klebsiella spp (25%) as compared to the antibiotics alone.
