BioLite creates Greener Woodburning StoveBreakthrough: BioLite will provide populations that burn wood for cooking fuel, with a stove that uses half as much wood, cuts smoke by 95%, and nearly eliminates black carbon. Inventor: BioLite, United States The Story: A shocking 3 billion people burn wood for fuel every day, producing emissions equal to that of a car, causing smoke-related deaths, hastening deforestation, and creating black carbon, the second highest greenhouse gas after CO2.BioLite, winner of the second annual Innovation Open in Monterey, CA, has devised a wood burning stove that takes the waste heat to create the power to run a fan that can cut wood consumption in half, reduce smoke by 95% and nearly eliminate black carbon. The stove also uses less than half the wood of an open fire. The electricity created can also be used to charge a cell phone or LED lights. The produce is currently undergoing field tests and will be available commercially in early 2011. Trials in Guatemala generated overwhelming positive feedback. As well as being marketed to the developing world, BioLite sees a niche in the camp stove market as well. It can burn almost any solid fuel, such as sticks, pine cones, pellets and rice husks, and folds easily for packing. The camp version is only 7.5" tall and weights only 1lb. 10oz. You can even take it on an airplane. It is also great as an emergency preparedness tool. Visit the BioLite website to keep informed of when this ingenious invention will be available for putchase.
