Researchers have developed a 3D technology compatible with mobile devices that is able to sense the movement of a bare finger in the space above the device.

The system, called the 3D Air Touch, allows users to interact with images floating above the device. Previously, 3D systems have required large screens and other bulky devices—an approach that would not be feasible for use on mobile devices. To overcome these obstacles, the team from National Chiao Tung University in Taiwan designed a 3D system within a 4-inch display screen that features optical sensors embedded in the display pixels along with an incorporated infrared backlight. Sufficient lighting was achieved by equipping the device with angular scanning illuminators on its edges, resulting in a compact, 3D system with a wide field of view and unhindered by ambient conditions.
