3D Printed Cast Can Help Speed Healing

Apr-22-14 An innovative designer has proposed a concept cast that is not only 3D printed to be lightweight and comfortable, but can also speed healing.

The cast, conceived by designer Deniz Karasahin, was the winner of the 2014 Golden A'Design Award in the 3D printed forms category. The design features a custom printed cast that can be combined with a low-intensity ultrasound system. Such ultrasound therapy has been proven to aid in the healing of some bone fractures, but the solid nature of plaster has made the therapy difficult. The 3D printed cast, however, is equipped with ventilation holes that allow the ultrasound probes to make direct contact with the skin—a requirement for ultrasound healing.
