Researchers have created a 3D-printed patch embedded with functioning stem cells that could help a heart heal after a heart attack.
Developed by a team from the University of Minnesota, the patch differs from other heart-healing patches in that it features a 3D-printed matrix seeded with stem cells derived from human heart cells. In tests on mice, the patch offered a “significant increase in functional capacity,” and was eventually absorbed into the heart, eliminating the need for later surgery.
