A new adaptive robotic landing gear from DARPA could allow helicopters to take off and land on almost any terrain.
The landing gear features four jointed legs that fold up beneath the helicopter while in flight. Force sensitive sensors in the foot of each ‘leg’ allow the system to determine the ideal angle for each leg to assume in order to ensure the helicopter stays level, regardless of the makeup of the terrain. According to the development team, the adaptive gear reduces the risk of hard landings and allows the copters to land safely on slopes with angles up to 20 degrees.
