Beating Heart Patch Offers Outside Help

Beating Heart Patch Offers Outside Help
Dec-02-17
A ‘beating heart’ patch made of living cells grown outside the body could offer a new way to repair damaged hearts.

While the concept of living heart patches has been explored for some time, the patch from Duke University is the first that is as electrically active as natural heart tissue and large enough to cover the damaged tissue. The patch was made using human pluripotent stem cells injected into a structure and supplied with nutrients, resulting in a fully functional patch 2.5 square inches in size and up to eight cells thick.
