A new method of bonding rubber and electrical components could have applications ranging from sports to rehabilitation.
The technology, from a team at Imperial College London, overcomes the previous challenges of integrating electrical components into force-sensitive soft materials. Instead of adhesives, the team used pieces of metal-coated silicon to create a chemical bond between the electronics and the rubber. The team then used the new technique to create several prototypes, including a wearable chest band that monitors breathing and a squeezable ball that tracks hand rehabilitation progress.
