Camera Uses Light Echoes to See Around Corners

Camera Uses Light Echoes to See Around Corners
Jul-27-14
Researchers have developed a new camera system able to see around corners by using the reflected light from a laser beam.

The system, developed by a team from Bonn University, works by shining scattered light from a laser onto a wall. As the light bounces off the wall, it forms "light echoes" (information about the object) that are captured by a video camera able to record the direction of the light and how long it took to travel from the source to the camera. By applying a mathematical model developed by the team to cancel out any extraneous information, the system is able to deliver a rough outline of the object. In time, the team hopes technology will allow for a more detailed image.
