A new tubular cast design from the startup Cast21 offers a bespoke fitting that is lighter and more breathable than current versions.
Created by a group of students from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Campaign, the cast is made up of a series of connected hollow tubes that are wrapped around the break by the doctor, and then filled with an epoxy that causes them to harden. The tubes can be arranged in a variety shapes and colors, and the open-design exposes more skin—making the cast lightweight, cooler, and less itchy.
