Chimaera Nerve-Finder Guides Surgeons To Pain Relief

Chimaera Nerve-Finder Guides Surgeons To Pain Relief
Jul-18-15
The handheld Chimaera device helps guide neurosurgeons to specific nerves, allowing for more specific placement of pain-relieving neurostimulating devices.

Neurostimulation is used to help combat chronic pain, but placing the devices in the correct location can be difficult. The Chimaera device makes implanting the devices easier by combining several functions into one unit that performs sensing, surgical and implant delivery.

When the device is held near the proposed incision site, information about that location is combined with an earlier CT scan of the patient. That information is translated into a 3D, X-ray image that is sent to the surgeon’s optical wearable device (Google Glass, for example) in real time, allowing the surgeon to guide the implant to the correct location.
