The disposable and inexpensive Cicada drones can glide automatically to their target and transmit important data before their battery life runs out.
Currently in development by the US Navy, the motorless Cicada drones (Close-In Covert Autonomous Disposable Aircraft) are about the size of a hand and are equipped with task-specific sensors and a microchip. Once released from an aircraft, the drones will fly silently (and therefore practically invisibly) to their target, where they will then gather and transmit information for as long as their battery lasts.
According to the developers, the drones could be used to in a variety of applications, from tracking enemy vehicles to monitoring the weather.
