Researchers have created a prototype glass panel able to change color based on the energy in its battery, which could open the door to more efficient animated displays.
The panels feature color-changing, rechargeable batteries and energy-storable dye-sensitized solar cells (ES-DSSCs). The batteries have been integrated into the panels, where they will change from transparent to a deep-blue color as they lose charge—in turn changing the color of the stained glass panel.
The technology could be used to create animated displays that run on less power than the back-lit, LCD versions, or it could be integrated into lighting to help set the ambiance in a room.
