Connected Vehicles Communicate for Increased Safety

Connected Vehicles Communicate for Increased Safety
Aug-30-12
Michigan will soon being testing an automated traffic safety system based on the connected network of about 3000 volunteer vehicles.

The Connected Vehicles system, launched by the US Department of Transportation and the University of Michigan, will allow the vehicles to communicate with each other via Wi-Fi by sending location information to the vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure network devices. The web of communication will help to cut down on the majority of crashes, which usually occur during merging and at intersections.

Communications with roadside units will also alert drivers when they are entering areas such as school or work zones, or even if the traffic light ahead is about to change.
