Created by wearable designer Katia Vega, the Hairware hair-clip lets wearers control their smartphone covertly by touching their hair.
Vega has already created a range of Beauty Technology devices, including a drone that will launch with an eye-blink and artificial nails embedded with RFID tags. The newest arrival, the Hairware, is a collection of metallized filaments that have been integrated into natural looking extensions and then attached to a hair clip. Since hair is able to store electric charges, the system can sense when the hair is stroked, and how often (one stroke could launch an app and two strokes send message, for example.) The hair clip itself is equipped with an Arduino microcontroller, Bluetooth, and an algorithm that will allow it to learn which action the user intends to trigger.
Vega believes the technology could be particularly attractive as a new form of personal security for women, and is also working on a beard-based version.
