The German cleantech company Sunfire has developed a way to produce synthetic fuels cleanly and efficiently—bringing us a step closer to weaning ourselves from coal and petroleum-based fuels.
The process, which the company calls "Power-to-Liquid" technology, converts carbon monoxide and hydrogen into liquid hydrocarbons using the Fischer-Tropsch process and solid oxide electrolyser cells.
The SOEC are powered by alternative energy and convert water to steam, from which oxygen is then removed to create hydrogen. The hydrogen is used to convert carbon dioxide, which has been harvested from the air, into carbon monoxide, and then both the hydrogen and carbon monoxide are combined using the Fichser-Tropsch process to create hydrocarbons. One machine is able to recycle 3.2 tons of CO2 while producing a barrel of fuel per day.
