Transparent transistors manufactured on glass tubes could be an important step towards creating an artificial pancreas
Developed by a team at Oregon State University, the nanotechnology involves fabricating transparent transistors directly on to curved surfaces, with an eye toward creating glucose sensors that can wrap around the tube. Since the transistors are integral to the surface, they will not peel off, and the electronic performance is as good as transistors placed on flat surfaces via non-printing methods.
Although the research was aimed at developing a bloodstream-embedded catheter able to monitor glucose levels, the technology could also have applications in endoscopes and neural imaging devices.
