Stanford researchers have developed a molecular diamond anvil that can create custom molecules via extreme pressure.
Typically, the chemical reactions used to develop products like pharmaceuticals are triggered by either chemicals or heat. As a potential (and long sought after) alternative, the team from Stanford demonstrated a method of using rigid diamond and carborane molecules as ‘molecular anvils’ to crush a softer molecule made of copper and sulfur, breaking the atomic bonds apart.
Although still in the demonstration phase, the molecular anvil opens doors to a new way of manipulating single atoms and their atomic bonds.
