A new material that dissolves in the body could help improve hernia surgeries.
During hernia surgeries, the intestinal wall is held out of the way by a piece of material that must be removed for the final stitches to be completed—which can still allow for a bit of tissue to slip through.
The new material, from a team at Cornell, is made up of a mixture of polyethylene glycol and dihydroxyacetone, which is flexible enough to slip through the incision and sturdy enough to prevent punctures. The material will keep the tissue in place during suturing, and then will dissolve in the body over time.
