Electronic Cuff Controls High Blood Pressure

Electronic Cuff Controls High Blood Pressure
May-15-14
An electronic cuff designed to be implanted in neck to control high blood pressure could provide an alternative for the 35 percent of people for whom medication does not work.

Developed by a team from the University of Freiburg, the cuff is equipped with 24 electrodes and is meant to be implanted in the vagal nerve on the neck. Once the device has determined which of the electrodes is nearest the nerve fibers that transmit the blood pressure signal, it will use electrostimulation to overwrite the faulty signal and bring to blood pressure back down to a safe level. This process of individual analysis, selection and stimulation has been named "BaroLoopTM" by the research team.
