EPIMADA App Lets EpiPen Users Share

EPIMADA App Lets EpiPen Users Share
May-06-18
The EPIMADA app lets people suffering from an allergic reaction without their EpiPen handy find other users willing to share their device.

Though the EpiPen and its vital does of epinephrine can save the life of a person suffering from anaphylactic shock, patients can sometimes neglect to have their personal device with them.

Developed by a team from Bar-Ilan University, the EPIMADA app relies on the same sort of proximity algorithms as those used by ride-sharing companies like Uber or Gett. The app connects EpiPen users to one another, alerting nearby individuals if a registered patient finds themselves suffering from an attack unprepared. Hundreds of allergy sufferers have already signed onto the app, and, according to doctoral student Michal Gaziel Yablowitz, “Our preliminary research results show that allergy patients are highly motivated to give their personal EpiPen™ to patient-peers in immediate need, something generally uncommon among total strangers.”
