Fitness Game for the Severely Disabled

Fitness Game for the Severely Disabled
Feb-09-15
Researchers at Fraunhofer have turned to video games as a way to inspire the physically impaired to exercise and stay fit.

The game system, currently being tested with victims of thalidomide, uses a shoulder pad embedded with sensors to track the player's motions and control characters on the screen. A smart chair that allows the player to control movements with their buttocks augments the controller, and voice recognition software adds another interactive element while also letting players communicate with one another.

By gamifying the patients' exercise routines, patients are much more likely to engage in the kind of repetition the exercises demand.
