Flash-Charging Electric Busses

Flash-Charging Electric Busses
Jun-04-13
A new “flash-charging” system charges an electric bus in only 15 seconds—about the same time it takes people to board or unload at a stop—and sets the vehicle free from overhead lines.

While most electric buses require overhead lines or lengthy recharge stops, the new system allows the bus to receive a quick 400kW power boost at certain stops. These stops are equipped with a laser-driven arm that connects to the receptacle on vehicle, topping off the bus’s charge in about 15 seconds. Electricity for the charging stations is created with hydropower.

The system is currently being tested in Geneva, Switzerland as part of the Trolleybus Optimisation Systeme Alimentation (TOSA).
