Glucose-Monitoring Contact Lens

Glucose-Monitoring Contact Lens
Jan-21-14
Google has announced it has begun testing a contact lens able to measure glucose levels in tears—offering a potentially more effective way to manage diabetes.

The lens is embedded with a miniature wireless chip and glucose sensor sandwiched between two layers of soft contact lens material. According to Google, the prototype is able to generate glucose levels readings at the rate of once per second. The team is also investigating ways the lens could function as an early warning system for the user, and is exploring ways to integrate LED lights that could indicate when glucose levels have dropped or risen past the threshold.

As a someone with diabetes who regularly tests his blood, an innovation when offers a continuous reading of blood glucose without the need to pierce the body is to be welcomed. I think I could learn to wear a contact lens regularly, with a reader worn (as watch-like jewellery?) somewhere close by.

As Danny Shah noted, cost is a key factor.
