Growing Fungus Bricks

Growing Fungus Bricks
Sep-28-12
Bricks made from the underground fibers of mushrooms could help to replace the conventional materials made from petroleum-based plastics.

The process, developed by fungus artist Philip Ross, involves using dried mycelium, the thin, rootlike fibers of the mushroom that grow underground. The dry mycelium can be grown and formed into almost any shape, and is incredibly strong as well as resistant to fire, water and mold. According to Ross: “With this stuff it’s possible to go into regional production of biomaterials. For instance, here in San Francisco, we could start producing lots of local materials using this fungus and could create a pilot project of sorts.”

The process is currently patent-pending.
