Implant Sends Sound with Light

Implant Sends Sound with Light
Nov-22-17
An innovative new cochlear implant uses laser pulses to deliver sound more accurately.

Instead of electric fields, which are commonly used to stimulate the auditory nerves, the new implant uses lasers, which are able to target specific nerves much more accurately. According to Dr. Mark Fretz, the heat generated by the laser light creates a sound wave in the fluid of the cochlea, stimulating the hairs that help transmit sound to the brain.
