Soft, injectable electrodes could offer a more comfortable alternative to the rigid nerve-stimulating implants used to treat epilepsy and pain.
Neuromodulation therapy is very useful for reducing seizures, chronic pain and other conditions, but the electrodes used in the procedure are rigid and must be implanted by surgery. As a more comfortable alternative, the team from the University of Wisconsin-Madison created a soft, injectable electrode made up of conductive metal nanoparticles suspended in a liquid silicon. The silicon can be injected around the target nerve, where it will form a flexible contact that moves easily with the body.
