INTERCEPT System Deactivates Pathogens in Plasma

INTERCEPT System Deactivates Pathogens in Plasma
Dec-21-14
Recently receiving FDA approval, the INTERCEPT Blood System for Plasma prevents infections by "deactivating" viruses and bacteria before they enter the patient's bloodstream.

The system takes advantage of the fact that blood plasma, which lacks living cells, does not need DNA or RNA to remain functional for therapeutic use. Using a proprietary molecule that binds to and blocks all replication of DNA and RNA, the system deactivates the viruses and bacteria and renders them harmless. And since the system targets almost all pathogens, it also eliminates the need for constant monitoring or specialized compounds.

The INTERCEPT system has already been used in Europe for more than ten years, and has recently proven its value in the U.S. as it has been used to stockpile plasma from Ebola survivors.
