Being touted as the world's first family robot, the JIBO robot was designed to function more as a personal assistant than an appliance.
Already far exceeding its funding goal on Indiegogo, the JIBO is surprisingly affordable—which contributed to its mass appeal. Made of off-the-shelf components, the JIBO is equipped with a mobile CPU and a 5.7-inch touchscreen display, as well as touch sensors on its head, stereoscopic cameras and a stereoscopic microphone array (so it can determine a sound's direction). The bot's most endearing quality, however, may be its ability to move with smooth, fluid motions that have been choreographed by animatronics expert Fardad Faridi, a long-time collaborator with the robot's designer.
The JIBO can handle a variety of tasks, including taking photos, reading stories, reminding the users of appointments and anticipating other needs based on its understanding of the users' habits.
