Laser-Etched Windows Offer Better Reception

Laser-Etched Windows Offer Better Reception
Aug-30-16
Researchers at EPFL have developed laser-treated glass that could offer train passengers better mobile phone reception.

Typically, train windows are outfitted with double-glazed glass windows that have been embedded with a thin metal coating, which lets in light while keeping heat out. Unfortunately, this type of window coating will also block phone reception. As an alternative to expensive electronic boosters and repeaters, the team at EPFL used a precision laser to inscribe a pattern in the surface of the metal. The pattern cannot be detected by the naked eye, but it will allow electromagnetic waves and light though, while still blocking heat.
