Laser Therapy Encourages Tooth Repair

A new laser-based method of treating cavities could replace fillings by encouraging the tooth's dentin to grow back naturally.The method, undergoing study by a team at Wyss Institute, was developed around the idea that specific wavelengths of light can trigger the body's healing properties. As part of their research, the team beamed a dose of specifically-tuned laser light at a hole drilled in a rat's tooth, setting off a chain reaction that stimulated the stem cells to turn into dentin.
The team also believes their 'low-level light therapy' could be used to trigger stem cell in other area of the body. However, for now they are focusing their research on human trials involving the stimulation of dentin.
