Living Sensor Material Glows on Contact

Living Sensor Material Glows on Contact
Feb-17-17
A living sensor that lights up in response to certain chemicals could have applications in crime scene investigations and medicine.

Created by a team from MIT, the sensor material is made up of live E. coli cells suspended in a hydrogel that have been genetically modified to light up when they contact specific chemicals. The hydrogel was used to create a glove and a bandage that illuminated after touching certain chemicals, and the team believes the living material design can be altered to sense an array of different chemicals and contaminants.
