A low-cost prosthetic knee from MIT could bring a new level of mobility and independence to people in developing nations.
Knee prosthetics that allow for natural motion are expensive, equipped with sensors and gyroscopes and costing up to $50,000. In order to make the prosthetic more accessible to everyone, the MIT team eschewed the complex electronics in favor of a spring and two dampers. This low-key designed delivers a torque profile that rivals higher-end prosthetics, and offers a more natural gait.
The team hopes that the affordable device will not only allow more people to walk naturally, but also relieve some of the stigma associated with wearing a prosthetic.
