The Multi—a cable-free elevator propelled by magnets—could see us taking the elevator sideways as well as up and down.
The system, designed by ThyssenKrupp, uses the same maglev technology found in high-speed trains, and can transport people horizontally as well as vertically. The cabins, as they are called, travel in a loop at 16 feet a second, and more than one elevator can pass through a single shaft.
According to some statistics, New York office workers spend a total of 16.6 years waiting for elevators each year.
