An innovative new diode that harvests environmental infrared energy could one day help generate electricity.
Developed by a team from KAUST, the proof-of-concept device takes advantage of a specially designed antenna, called rectenna, to harvest waste and infrared heat as high-frequency electromagnetic waves. Although bringing the rectenna designs into actual practice has previously been difficult, the team improved on the device using metal-insulator-metal (MIM) diodes and a novel bowtie-shaped antenna. The result was a diode able to passively harvest infrared waves from radiation alone.
