Nanofiber Filter Could Lead to Implantable Kidney

Nanofiber Filter Could Lead to Implantable Kidney
Nov-14-15
Researchers have created nanofiber able to filter blood, opening the door to an artificial kidney that could be implanted in the body.

Developed in collaboration between teams from the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) and Vanderbilt University, the prototype artificial kidney features a silicon nanofilter able to filter toxins and other materials from the blood. The device is meant to be implanted in the patient near the kidneys, where it would be powered by the body’s own blood pressure.

According to William Fissell from Vanerbilt University, “We are increasing the options for people with chronic kidney disease who would otherwise be forced onto dialysis.”
