Researchers have created a nose swab test for asthma, offering a quicker and more accurate way to diagnose the disease.
The test, developed by a team from the Mount Sinai Health System, offers an alternative to conventional pulmonary function testing, which requires both special equipment and trained clinicians. The “nasal brushing” test is based on machine learning algorithms that analyzed the swab-collected RNA of volunteers with and without asthma. By comparing the differences in the RNA, the team was able to identify a 90-gene biomarker that indicates asthma. Armed with that information, the researchers hope to create a nasal swab test able to replace pulmonary function testing.
