An innovative design allows a four-wheel vehicle to shift its center of gravity without losing traction as the vehicle takes a sharp turn.
Like the round wheels of motorcycles, which provide traction in turns on their rounded sides, the DAWS (Dynamically Augmenting Wheel System) is designed to conform in such a way as to provide the entire surfuce of the tire on the ground when the vehicle takes a corner.
By dividing the wheel into eight segments that can twist independently, the new design can put all the rubber on the road even when the vehicle is tilted in a turn. The result would deliver not only better traction but better braking in turning situations.
Below, a depiction of how the DAWS wheel would configure itself when driving straight (left) and when cornering (right).
